Croaker and spot are caught throughout the season while striped bass, flounder, gray trout, and red drum also arrive at the pier at various times. A bait shop is on site.

Grandview Fishing Pier

Grandview Fishing Pier Fishing Pier is located in Hampton Virginia. The pier is a good spot to enjoy saltwater fishing for spot, croaker, striped bass and other Virginia fish.

Buckroe Beach Fishing Pier

The Buckroe Beach Fishing Pier was rebuilt by the city of Hampton and re-opened in 2009 after being destroyed during Hurricane Isabel. The pier is famous for its excellent fishing for cobia, croakers, spot and other fish.The 706-foot pier is located at 330 S. Resort Boulevard, near Point Comfort Road. The new pier, supported by concrete pilings with wooden decks and railings, is 16 feet wide and is equipped with rest rooms, a snack bar and bait shop.The "T" section at the end of the pier is 70 feet wide and 26 feet long. The pier has lights to attract fish, handicapped accessibility, parking, two fish-cleaning stations and shelters in case of severe weather.

The Sandbridge Pier

The Sandbridge Pier, also known as the Little Island Fishing Pier is a popular Virginia fishing pier. The structure is located approximately 15 miles from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront/Resort Area. Species caught from the pier include spot, croaker, red and black drum, cobia, Spanish and king mackerel, pompano, flounder, whiting, bluefish, speckled trout, weakfish, blacktip sharks, skates and stingrays.

Fall is pretty much here and that means back to some really good fishing. When the water temp begins to cool, bass in deep water return to the shallows and with all the prey that Bass had to eat through out summer depleted or reduced, you can find bass wondering the shallows looking for an easy meal. The weather conditions are as they were in the spring, the sun is low in the sky, the temperatures are down, it is much like pre-spawn conditions. Many anglers quit fishing when fall hits, but I think they are missing out on one of best times of the year to fish for bass, just like the feeding frenzy during pre-spawn, there is a fall frenzy as well.

Of course as fall goes on the surface temperatures begin to drop and soon will be the same temp as deeper water. This is called fall turnover and means that the water temperatures throughout the lake are the same. When this occurs Bass can be any where in the lake and are very hard to locate. This is when you have to focus on structure, try to find any transition from one feature to the next, rocks to weeds for example.

Eventually as the weather turns colder, shallow water temps will be colder then deep water. At this time of the season Bass will head for the deeper warmer
water and stay there through winter.

Where to fish for Bass in the Fall

Basswill come shallow on those unusually warm days in the fall to feed, this is when you need to be on the lake and hunting for Bass. You should be looking for any left over green weeds from summer, if you find any, fish that area thoroughly. Also, fish shallow flats that are protected by wind, they tend to warm up faster. Another good area to fish is a shoreline on the north side of the lake that has rocks, boulders or rip rap. The sun hits the rock warming
them up quickly in turn will warm the water.

Choosing a Lake

When it comes to choosing a lake in early fall, look for one that is smaller and more shallow. These shallow lakes tend to cool faster then deep lakes but keep in mind that they will also go through fall turn over earlier as well. So in late fall the deeper lakes with warmer deep water is a better choice.
