I think your on the right track- Garmin makes a decent finder. My Bro-Inlaw has had a G-140 on his boat for 10 years without a hiccup. The only thing he's had to restore is the transducer cable, (mice chewed on the cable when the boat was stored).

Here's the 140- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SportingGoods_Electronics--Marine+Electronics_10151_-1_10001_navbar_page5_N_250003000_250000000_250003000_false_25___4

Other Finders to look at?

- Humminbird 570- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_021004&id=0075705021109a

- Lowrance Mark 5 Pro- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602025-cat602011&id=0075699021005a&navCount=4&podId=0075699&parentId=cat602011&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IA&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602011&hasJS=true

The above models are excellent, (big screens, powerful sonar, easy to use, Etc). However, they are "older" technologies. Currently, the "rage", is sonar's with GPS. GPS can be a god-send when you want to come back EXACTLY, (within 10-20 FT), to the spot you caught fish before. Here are some models that won't "put you in the poor house":

- Humminbird 768/GPS- This is a STEAL at the sale price. Check it out- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602025-cat602012&id=0075168020954a&navCount=12&podId=0075168&parentId=cat602012&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true

- Humminbird 365i/GPS- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602025-cat602012&id=0074728020925a&navCount=15&podId=0074728&parentId=cat602012&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IA&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602012&hasJS=true

Technically, your best "brands" to keep your eye on are Humminbird, Garmin & Lowrance.

Hope this info helps ya? Good luck fishing.

Go to Cabelas.com or Bassproshops.com. Eagle fishfinders are made by Lowrance. They tend to be very good value.

Having said that, it looks like the starting price is closer to $300 for a sonar/GPS combo, and $500-600 for a decent one. They can go for $1200 with all the bells and whistles.

What is the best fish-finder for under $200?
I will be using it out of a canoe or drift boat and will be fishing in fresh lake water with a max depth of about 200ft. Thanks.

What is the best fishfinder to buy?
I am looking to buy a fishfinder and would like some advice on which one to buy. I will be using it trout fishing on the lakes in Ireland, and don't want to spend a fortune if there is a basic model which does what I need it to (depth / trout!! being the main functions). I have been looking at the Garmin models, but there is quite a range, and a range of prices, so any help gratefully received!

The Garmin is ok, I've read mixed reviews. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_74175_200001001_200000000_200001000_200-1-1 Check out the Eagle Cuda 168 portable. It's great for kayaks. Check it out for yourself, don't forget to scroll down and read the reviews. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_75236_200001001_200000000_200001000_200-1-1
